A popular Instagram page recently reposted this picture, and it reminded me of how much I hate bodycon. I know you've heard that bodycon flatters everyone, but as a representative of "The Others," I'm here to say...
Where they at?!
Bodycon, short for body conscious, refers to clothing made to conform to the contours of the female body. The style came about as a response to the figure-hugging bandage dress created by Herve Leger.
Now don't get me wrong, I love a good bandage dress and a bodycon in the right fabric can work wonders on the body, but that can get expensive. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the unforgiving material that many "affordable bodycon" pieces are made of. I mean, c'mon, there aren't supposed to be dimples there.
Let's face it, as women our bodies are constantly in a transitional phase. What about the days you're not feeling so masochistic?
Here are 5 sexy alternatives to bodycon, with options under $50.
1. The Wrap Dress
Wrap dresses are flattering on almost every figure. They both create and smooth out a silhouette. They cling only wear you want them to, and flow where they need to. Play around with the neck and hemlines if you're looking for a little more (or less) sexy. A faux-wrap dress, like the one I'm wearing above, is also great if you want the same relationship, just no-strings-attached.
2. The Shift Dress
I know you're probably thinking, "how can a shift dress be sexy?" And that's probably because somebody told you sexy requires you to show some skin or wear something a little too tight for your circulation. Not true. A shift dress in with a print or pattern, or in a bold fabric can definitely be sexy.
3. The Shirt Dress
A cousin of the shift dress, the shirt dress is another sexy alternative. It's also super comfortable. The shirt dress can be worn casually, or dressed up depending on the style and fabric.
4. The Maxi Dress
The maxi dress is kind of a given at this point. Women love them, men love them AND they don't have to be skin-tight to be sexy. Try a long-sleeved maxi dress pairing for the cooler months, like this. Add cutouts and deep plunges if you're looking for a sexier look.
5. The Skater Dress/Skirt
Skater dresses can also be super sexy. They often come in backless styles or with cutouts. They can be easily paired with stockings and a sweater for a family-friendly look, and can be worn casually (let's say, with Converses or Vans) or dressed up with heels. You can also try a skater skirt with a tank or crop top!
