Debunking the Myths of Fashion: Personal Style

There are many myths and misconceptions when it comes to personal style. While the majority of these myths are derived from old fashion laws, magazines or even icons, many are self-imposed. Here are just a few ways you can find your personal style, without limiting yourself!

1. Myth: You Must Have One Style

Truth: You don't have to stick to one particular style! Now, don't get me wrong...the pieces in your wardrobe should always "make sense" when it comes to who you are as a person, but they don't have to correspond to the same "look." For example, when people ask me what my style is, I always tell them Classy Sexy. Regardless of what i'm wearing or what look i'm going for, it will always be classy and sexy, be it sweatpants, a dress or jeans.

Coco Note: Think of your closet as a book.  The chapters can all be different, but they come together to form a story. Your wardrobe is a story.

2. Myth: You Must By Designer to Get Good Quality

BREAKING NEWS!!! You can mix high-end with low-end pieces! Sounds like common sense and something you've definitely heard of before, but you'd be surprised how many people are still stepping out in head-to-toe Gucci. Yes, if you got it, you should definitely flaunt it! But you should always live within your means.

Coco Note: Look for affordable, quality pieces that will last without breaking the bank! Go higher-end for basics, shoes, outerwear and handbags.

3. Myth: Stick to What You Know

We all have our go-to stores and boutiques, both online and brick-and-mortar, but can discover great pieces you didn't know you were into when you step away from H&M and Forever21!

Coco Note: Start by trying out stores that have similar price points and styles as what you're used to. Youtube is a great resource!

4. Myth: A Monochromatic Wardrobe is Chic

Yes, it's cool to pull a Kanye and rock out in head-to-toe black, but you really miss out on expressing yourself daily when you restrict yourself!

Coco Note: Start by trying patterns/prints in the color palette you're used to. You can do a black and white checkered, polka dot or striped print. You can also mix colorful solids into your wardrobe or look by adding brights and pastels.

5. Myth: You Must Follow the Tide

Don't be afraid to swim against the current! You don't HAVE to follow every trend, color of the season or blogger's advice (including mine!).

Coco Note: Just keep swimming ;)

Let me know how you prove these myths false everyday!
